Spa Heating

Types of Spa Heaters

There are several ways in which to heat a spa, the type of Spa Heater is determined upon how you intend to use the spa.

Gas Spa Heater

By far the best option is gas heating, as the volume of water in a spa is generally around 4000 liters it is quite economical to heat a spa with a gas heater.  Gas heaters are also very quick off the mark to bring the water temperature up to the desired degree which deletes the necessity for forward planning. Some describe gas heaters as “heating on demand” Gas heaters are ideal for those “out of season” party’s or BBQ’s.

Electric Heat Pumps

Electric heat pumps are ideal if the spa is required to maintain constant heat for long periods of time.  Heat pumps are somewhat slow to reach the desired temperature but once there they are very economical at maintaining the heat. Heat pumps are often used in therapeutic spas where the water temperature is required to be constantly maintained at a set temperature for long periods of time.

Solar Spa Heater

Solar heating is another option to heat a spa although as the name suggests solar heaters are reliant on the sun. With an integrated pool and spa combination solar heating combined with a gas heater will work well. Solar heating is an ideal method for heating a pool as the desired temperature for a pool is far less than that of a spa, generally the desired pool temperature is around 25 to 26 degrees.

To utilize a solar and gas heating combination the solar heater can be used to raise the spa temperature a good number of degrees initially, depending on the time of year and the intensity of the sun then the gas heater cuts in as a booster and takes over to raise the temperature to the desired level. This combination is a very economical way to heating a spa as a solar heater is inexpensive to operate, it requires only the use of a pump to drive the water through the solar collector, the heat is free, therefore the more expensive gas heater is only required as a booster or top up.

Spa interiors

There are various interior linings that can be installed in spas, the same as the interior linings that are installed in pools. The most comfortable lining for a spa is to fully tile the spa as tiles are smooth, sometimes people may wish to tile the spa seat and riser only and pebble the spa well if the pool is pebbled in order to aesthetically gel the pool and spa together.
